Abstract

PAX.ARQ is a young architectural firm, founded by Miguel Felipe Muralha, Paula Sertório e Victor Paixão, which has received international attention as can be seen for the invitation to participate in an New Practices exhibition in New York this year. The office also has participated in several international competitions, winning some awards. One of these contests was the new headquarters of the Foundation for Contemporary Architecture in the Andalusian city of Cordoba. As the competition provided that the new building should be located in an urban and a consolidated city space containing archaeological remains buried. Its authors understood that the proposed architectural object could not mean the imposition of a new architecture that imposes a decontextualization of architectural consolidated and representative. But the new object would require, however, waving their contemporary condition, as well as all the buildings around transmits its particular historical and temporal significance. The proposal came from the location of a stark block that marks an access to the Huerto de San Pablo inviting the visitor into the Huerto, where you have access to the building itself. This strategy of design allows the user initially to recognize their immediate surroundings and then step into the new building of the FAC. This construction is revealed thus in the second instance. Loose from the floor, we found a huge block aerated with facades composed of bricks spaced gaps that generate suitable to the needs of lighting environments. This cube with its filigreed flies almost immaterial lightness the archaeological site, which has always been regarded as the central point of the project.
