Urban public spacequality: the contribution of recreation and preservationparks

The article discusses location criteria of green areas in urban structure, which refer to environmental attributes and the population’s recreational needs. The discussion deals with the differences and similarities between the objectives of promoting quality of life and environmental preservation of cities. The method studied the two types of commonly used green areas in cities: leisure parks and preservation parks, to, based on the law, identify criteria location for its definition. From a conceptual point of view, it was found the foundations of urban theories that prioritize one or other type of park, to finally, analyze differences and similarities between the two types of parks in the construction of urban environmental sustainability. The empirical study compared OlhosD’Água Park and Parque da Cidade in Brasilia-DF. As a result, it was found the complementarity of the two types of parks that respond to current urban needs as social interaction and interaction with nature, with emphasis on further studies on the environmental characteristics to deploy the two types or park.
