Due to the acknowledgement of the environmental limits of the planet, this article intends to understand the relation between nature and society from a historical perspective to reflect on the environmental and social consequences of the current model of urban development. In this context, it is wise to note that the large extensions of land occupied by streets present us with an opportunity, and a challenge, to adopt innovative strategies of urban rehabilitation that take into consideration the complex and ever-changing nature of our local urban environment.
