ESPAÇO PÚBLICO NA SÃO PAULO DO SÉCULO XXI: PERSPECTIVAS

The present work intends to point out the unrolling of the relationship between citizens and their public spaces and, therefore, the meaning that those spaces assume for the society as a whole, based in a model of urban development that, as a means of answering to the matter of circulation and transports, privileged the automobile as the main guarantor of mobility. In a brief historical perspective, the period in which those concerns appeared is situated; the disparity between population growth in the city of São Paulo and the quality of its urban expansion is shown; the compromises in public spaces are analyzed against the car as primary means of urban transport trough two key examples and, finally, we bring forward the irreversibility of this commitment in case the way of thinking the city as a mobility machinery is not modified.
