Abstract

This paper presents the translation of an article by the Italian architect Giancarlo de Carlo published originally in 1988, where he informs the circumstances surrounding his broad experience while director of the restoration and reuse work on the Benedictine Complex of the town of Catania. (1980-1988). It is a valuable record of the methodological principles and procedures adopted in course of managing the process, which resulted in an intervention capable of establishing a clear connection between past and present, while conciliating permanence and innovation.
