Abstract

The importance of seeing in the development of comprehension of three-dimensional space for architectural design and teaching purposes justifies the research The Education of seeing: apprehension of geometric attributes of the shapes of places, which takes place in PROARQ/FAU-UFRJ. In order to understand the architectural shapes and thinking of them in logical and mathematical way, we applied Shape Grammaras methodology of analysis. It has big affinity with the ongoing research, due to the analytical and synthetical applications in the knowledge of built form and, consequently, opens up the capacity of visualization and the ability to design new forms. This paper describes the Project produced during the workshop StudyingRocinha, a Shape Grammar approach, under the guidance of the professors Terry Knight – MIT and Gabriela Celani – UNICAMP, in a study of analysis of the settlement of Rocinha’s buildings and its volumes.
