Abstract

Video games have proven to be an exponentially evolving field in recent years. This field has a close relationship with architecture in terms of its design process and the need to create inhabitable spaces. This study begins by creating a chronological framework of the graphic development of video games, and then describes the design process of a video game, primarily from the perspective of space and architecture. It then analyses some examples of video games, organised according to a proposed categorisation representing various types of spaces. Finally, in order to validate the characterisation and examine the spatial, aesthetic, and structural characteristics of each type of video game, usability tests are conducted with multiple players. These tests allow us to recognise the players' perception of the space in each video game, with the goal of identifying how architecture influences each user's gaming experience. Our conclusions indicate that there is not enough evidence to show that players are sensitive to inconsistent architectural issues in video games, but they do react to spatial stimuli.

José Pedro Piteira, RISE Visual Effects Studios

José Piteira criou desde cedo uma paixão pelo mundo da imagem e da criatividade. Hoje em dia aplica-a no desenvolvimento de efeitos visuais para grandes produções cinematográficas, como “The Batman” e “Star Wars: Andor”. Piteira é mestre em Arquitetura pela Escola de Tecnologias e Arquitectura do ISCTE e é formado em 3D Avançado pela ODD School-Creative Media. Atualmente, trabalha como Artista 3D na RISE|Visual Effects Studios.

Sara Eloy, University of Antwerp

Sara Eloy investiga sobre a aplicação de tecnologias digitais emergentes no campo da arquitetura e vê estas tecnologias como um meio essencial e eficaz para abordagens inovadoras. Eloy é doutorada em Arquitetura pela Universidade Técnica de Lisboa e atualmente Professora Associada na Universidade de Antuérpia e investigadora no grupo Henry Van de Velde.
